What Will My Verse Be? -Pub 5

We as human beings all crave the attention and love from someone else. We need the feeling of love to be accepted and to feel good about ourselves. The feeling does not always come easy though. For many of us the road to happiness is full of heartache and desire. How many times have we all wanted something or even someone we know we can not have. We know the feelings will not go away so we write about them. We write poems and stories to be felt not heard. There is a poem that relates to this idea very well as long as two songs that interconnect as well.

The poem is called All I Ever Wanted, and it is written by Katie Ford. My favorite line in this poem is the last line. She states, “To want to make a fire with someone, with you, was all.” The pain she is feeling in this piece can be felt even solely by the last lines of the poem. The theme throughout is the constant desire to want someone and experience all the happy times others are feeling and then not being able to have the experience with the one person you want.

The song All I Ever Need by Austin Mahone is a prime example of this desire as well. This song starts with “Don’t the water grow the trees, don’t the moon pull the tides, don’t the stars light the sky like you need to light my life.” He is comparing the one person he truly wants and then cannot have to basic everyday situations that happen naturally, which is what he wants, he wants their love to occur naturally.

The song Crush by David Archuleta is another perfect example. The song talks about the singer having a crush on someone who he knows he may never end up with. Throughout the song you get the idea that they are friends, but he wants something more, there is the constant desire especially in the lyrics “Why do I keep running from the truth all I ever think about is you.” Have you ever felt the pain of wanting someone so bad, but you know it is wrong and you try to keep them off your mind, but you just cannot, this is that feeling.

The feeling that you cannot escape the desire for that person, even if you know you cannot have them? There are so many obstacles in the way and you want to just drive right through them because you keep thinking about how happy you could be with this person. The happiness they could bring you, the happiness they do bring you. Then you start to truly think if you want them or you are just desiring the idea of them, is it all just an illusion. You can try to push the feelings aside, but you will always find them when digging up in your mind.

This poem states “In the middle of my life, it was right to say my desires, but they went away. I couldn’t even make them out, not even as dots now in the distance.” Truly the feelings are hard to repress but they can all soon just become a dot in the past or an old photograph, which reminds me of the song Need you now by Lady Antebellum when they say, “Picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor.” Pictures can show your happiest times in life, but they can also bring you back to some of your worst. “We keep this love in a photograph”, as Ed Sheeran states. Love can be stored in photos or your mind, so no matter how hard you try to repress emotions, they come back to be there with you forever.
